Which Pokémon booster packs give you the best shot at a valuable card? Most "best packs" lists are opinion. This one is built from tonight's market prices: we rank recent sets by what their chase cards are actually worth and show the numbers behind the ranking. It updates every night, so the order changes with the market. Prices are ungraded market prices from TCGplayer sales, and none of this is a promise about what you'll pull.

Quick Ranking

Here are the sets we compare, ranked by the combined price of their ten most valuable cards. We also show the price of a sealed booster pack and booster box where our data has them. These are current market prices on TCGplayer, not retail prices.

Right now Prismatic Evolutions leads, followed by Ascended Heroes and Black Bolt. The next section explains why we rank this way, and what the ranking can and can't tell you.

How We Rank Packs

We rank sets by top-10 chase value: the sum of the market prices of the ten most valuable cards in the set. When you open packs hoping for a big hit, these are the cards that decide whether you come out ahead, so a set with a deep pool of valuable cards gives you more ways to win.

We also show the share of the set's value in its top five cards. That's the price of the five most valuable cards divided by the cost of one copy of every card. A high share (say, three quarters) means the value is concentrated in a few chase cards and the rest of the set is worth little. A lower share means value is spread more evenly, so a pack without a big hit is less of a letdown.

What we don't do is invent pull rates. The Pokémon Company publishes how many Commons, Uncommons and Rares come in a pack, but not how often each higher rarity appears. As TCGplayer puts it, the only way to find out is to open packs yourself, and even cards of the same rarity may not be printed in equal numbers. So our ranking measures what the hits are worth, not how likely you are to pull them. A set with valuable chase cards that are very hard to pull can be worse value per pack than a set with cheaper hits that turn up more often.

The newest main set, Pitch Black, isn't in the ranking yet. Its top ten cards currently add up to about $457.88, and its prices are still settling after release.

Set-by-Set Breakdown

For each set, here are its three most valuable cards today and a note on pull rates. None of these sets have official pull rates, and we haven't found a public study we could verify for this page, so we don't quote any. Treat the pull-rate figures you see online as estimates from people's own openings, with sample sizes that are often small.

Packs vs Booster Box vs Singles

Opening packs is fun, and that's a fine reason to buy them. As a way to get a specific card, though, packs are almost always the most expensive route. The table puts each set's top card next to its booster pack price:

Packs to equal = the top card's price divided by one booster pack's market price
SetTop cardCard pricePack pricePacks to equal
Prismatic EvolutionsUmbreon ex$1,137.17$13.6683
Ascended HeroesMega Gengar ex$734.45$10.7269

To pull a particular chase card you might need to open many packs, and you could open far more than the "packs to equal" figure without seeing it. Buying the single costs the same every time and you know exactly what you're getting. A booster box gives you many packs at once, but it doesn't change the odds inside any single pack.

Two habits help if you do open product. Decide your budget before you start, and price your pulls afterwards. Our card value calculator totals a stack of cards in one go, and the Pokémon card value checker helps you find any card's price. Remember that these are market estimates: the price you get when selling will usually be lower, after fees and shipping.

Best Packs for Kids / Playing vs Collecting

If you're buying for a child, or for playing the game rather than collecting, the ranking above matters much less. For playing, the best packs are from sets with cards that are legal in the current Standard format, and pre-built decks are a cheaper way to start than packs. For young collectors, sets full of favourite Pokémon and colourful art, with packs that are cheap and easy to find, give more fun per dollar than chasing the most valuable set. The Ascended Heroes and 151 sets, for example, are packed with well-known Pokémon.

Collectors chasing value should look at both columns in our ranking: the top-10 value and how concentrated it is. And whatever you buy, treat it as a hobby purchase, not an investment. Prices change daily, and nothing here is financial advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best Pokémon packs to buy right now?

By tonight's prices, Prismatic Evolutions, Ascended Heroes and Black Bolt have the most valuable top ten cards of the recent sets we compare. The ranking updates nightly, and it measures what the chase cards are worth, not how often you'll pull them.

Which Pokémon set has the best pull rates?

The Pokémon Company doesn't publish pull rates for the higher rarities, so there is no official answer. Pull rates you see online come from people's own pack openings and vary with the sample size. We rank sets by the value of their chase cards instead.

Is it better to buy packs or singles?

If you want a specific card, singles are almost always cheaper and certain. Packs are for the fun of opening; you may open many without pulling the card you want. Our table shows how many packs each set's top card is worth.

What is the most valuable card in Prismatic Evolutions?

Right now it's Umbreon ex (161/131) at about $1,137.17 ungraded. See the Prismatic Evolutions card list for every card's price.

Are Prismatic Evolutions packs worth it?

It depends on why you're buying. A Prismatic Evolutions booster pack sells for about $13.66 on TCGplayer, and the set's top card, Umbreon ex, for about $1,137.17. Most packs won't contain a chase card, so buy packs for fun and singles for specific cards.

What are the Ascended Heroes pull rates?

Official pull rates for Ascended Heroes haven't been published, and we don't quote unofficial estimates. What we can show is what its hits are worth: its top card, Mega Gengar ex, sells for about $734.45, and its top ten add up to about $2,930.80.
