Pokémon Cards by Era
The Pokémon TCG is usually split into eras named after the main game series of the time. Here is how the English cards divide between them:
| Era | Years | Sets | Cards |
|---|---|---|---|
| WOTC | 1999–2003 | 20 | 1,907 |
| EX | 2003–2007 | 20 | 1,789 |
| Diamond & Pearl / Platinum | 2007–2009 | 15 | 1,482 |
| HeartGold & SoulSilver | 2010–2011 | 7 | 578 |
| Black & White | 2011–2013 | 18 | 1,537 |
| XY | 2013–2016 | 26 | 3,290 |
| Sun & Moon | 2016–2019 | 24 | 4,145 |
| Sword & Shield | 2019–2023 | 31 | 4,647 |
| Scarlet & Violet | 2023–2025 | 26 | 3,911 |
| Mega Evolution | 2025–2026 | 11 | 1,157 |
| Undated | — | 17 | 1,053 |
We assign each set to an era by its name where the name says it (TCGplayer prefixes series sets with codes such as SWSH or SV). Otherwise we use the release date: a set belongs to the era of the most recent era-opening set released before it. Sets our data doesn't date, mostly older promo series, are counted on the "Undated" row. Recent eras have more cards per year, partly because modern sets include many secret rares and special subsets.
Pokémon Cards Released per Year
Here is how many English cards were released each year, counted by the release date of the set they belong to:
| Year | Sets | Cards | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1999 | 5 | 394 | |
| 2000 | 5 | 588 | |
| 2001 | 3 | 159 | |
| 2002 | 5 | 398 | |
| 2003 | 5 | 677 | |
| 2004 | 6 | 471 | |
| 2005 | 4 | 474 | |
| 2006 | 4 | 405 | |
| 2007 | 6 | 575 | |
| 2008 | 5 | 482 | |
| 2009 | 5 | 533 | |
| 2010 | 6 | 472 | |
| 2011 | 7 | 566 | |
| 2012 | 6 | 528 | |
| 2013 | 7 | 776 | |
| 2014 | 7 | 562 | |
| 2015 | 8 | 952 | |
| 2016 | 11 | 1,807 | |
| 2017 | 7 | 754 | |
| 2018 | 8 | 1,972 | |
| 2019 | 9 | 1,475 | |
| 2020 | 6 | 993 | |
| 2021 | 9 | 1,207 | |
| 2022 | 13 | 1,903 | |
| 2023 | 14 | 1,870 | |
| 2024 | 8 | 1,297 | |
| 2025 | 10 | 1,418 | |
| 2026 | 7 | 713 |
So far in 2026, 7 English sets have added 713 cards. The year with the most new cards in our data was 2018, with 1,972 cards. Years with large special sets or promo collections stand out, because a single big product can add hundreds of cards.
Biggest and Smallest Pokémon Sets
Comparing expansions only (promos, decks, trainer kits, subsets and product lists are left out), these are the largest and smallest English sets by card count:
| Set | Released | Cards | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Biggest | ME: Ascended Heroes | Jan 30, 2026 | 295 |
| SWSH08: Fusion Strike | Nov 12, 2021 | 284 | |
| SV02: Paldea Evolved | Jun 9, 2023 | 279 | |
| SM - Cosmic Eclipse | Nov 1, 2019 | 271 | |
| SV04: Paradox Rift | Nov 3, 2023 | 266 | |
| Smallest | Southern Islands | Jul 31, 2001 | 18 |
| Detective Pikachu | Apr 5, 2019 | 18 | |
| Dragon Vault | Oct 5, 2012 | 21 | |
| Celebrations | Oct 8, 2021 | 25 | |
| Double Crisis | Mar 25, 2015 | 34 |
The biggest sets have grown over time, mostly because of secret rares numbered beyond the main set. The smallest are special sets released alongside the main series.
How Many Pokémon Cards Are Worth Money?
Most aren't worth much. Here is how the English cards with a recent market price split by ungraded price:
| Price range | Cards | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Under $1 | 13,757 | 49% |
| $1 to $10 | 8,157 | 29% |
| $10 to $100 | 4,882 | 17% |
| $100 or more | 1,233 | 4% |
That means 49% sell for under $1, and only 4% are worth $100 or more. This counts each priced printing once, so a card with a normal and a reverse holo version can appear twice. How We Count
Card counts are easy to get wrong, so here are our rules:
- We count unique cards, not copies. A "card" is one card number in one set. Billions of physical cards have been printed. The Pokémon Company publishes a running production total on its Pokémon in Figures page, but that counts printed copies, not different cards.
- Included: every main set, special set, subset (such as Classic Collection and Trainer Gallery lists) and promo series that TCGplayer lists, because each contains distinct cards.
- Excluded: sealed products (booster packs, boxes, Elite Trainer Boxes, bundles, tins), digital code cards, and duplicate listings of the same card number, such as reverse holo patterns listed separately.
- Released sets only. A set dated after today is listed ahead of release and isn't counted until it comes out.
Our data also has known gaps, and we'd rather show them than hide them:
- Base Set has 102 numbered cards, but our data is missing number 8/102, so we count 101.
- Our card list for 30th Celebration is incomplete. It has 45 cards, numbered as high as 158/128, and 93 numbers within the main set of 128 aren't in it yet. Treat counts and totals for this set as provisional until the import is finished.
Counts on other sites differ because they draw these lines differently. Some count every variant separately, some leave out promos, and some only count main expansions. Read where our prices and data come from for more on our source.
